Ethical Practice

Why is Ethical Practice Important?

On a daily basis, we are faced with decisions where the welfare of children and colleagues is at stake. Often others are affected by our decisions and we must decide how we are going to behave.

Caring for Nova Scotia's children is a big responsibility, and requires that we use ethical decision making practices. Ensuring that our practice is accountable and responsible, and ensuring the personal integrity of our members is an important function of the NSCCA. It is our commitment to society.

What is Ethical Practice?

Ethical practice involves recognizing when decisions have ethical components, knowing how our personal values and beliefs affect ethical decisions, and being skilled in the use of an ethical decision making model (using the NSCCA Code of Ethical Conduct & Guiding Principles and other appropriate considerations).

What is the NSCCA Code of Ethics?

The NSCCA Code of Ethical Conduct & Guiding Principles provides guidelines for responsible behaviour as a child care professional. It is a major consideration that must be referred to when making ethical decisions. It includes the association's beliefs about:

  • What is right rather than expedient
  • What is good rather than practical, and
  • What acts members must never engage in or condone

How will I Access my Ethics Mentor?

This service will be available to members in 2004. The process to access a mentor will be:

  • Call (Child Care Connections Nova Scotia) and request an ethics mentor. Information on where you are located and work will be taken to ensure your mentor does not have a conflict of interest. The information will be kept confidential.
  • Your mentor will contact you
  • Your mentor will help you through the ethical decision making process
  • Your mentor will then provide a summary of the dilemma to the NSCCA Ethics Committee. The information will be kept confidential. It is the committee's role to support and monitor the ethical practice of its members.
