Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) Process |
The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process is a process designed for members who do not possess an Early Childhood Care and Education certificate, diploma or degree and do not qualify as a voting member, but have worked in the child care field for a number of years. It compares that member's experience and other training (such as non-credit courses, professional development activities and relevant post secondary courses) to the Partners in Quality Standards of Practice (Doherty, (2000), Tools for Practitioners in Child Care Settings, Standards of Practice. Ottawa:CCCF). When a member's qualifications are assessed as meeting these standards, the member is given voting status. _____________________________________________________________________ What does the PLAR process involve? Participants in the PLAR process will receive training in the PLAR process and portfolio development. Participants must complete a portfolio of their qualifications, to be submitted to the PLAR committee.
The committee will assess the portfolio and make a recommendation regarding membership status. If there are gaps, the committee will work with the participant in developing a learning plan to meet all the qualifications to become a voting member of the NSCCA. _____________________________________________________________________ How do I apply to be a PLAR candidate? When filling out the NSCCA membership application form, check the "yes" box in section 3, and the Qualifications Review Committee will contact you. _____________________________________________________________________ |
